In 1986 Yuval and Moshe Lopan from Kibbutz Ginossar discovered an ancient boat. The boat was found on the shore of the Sea of Galilee south of the Yigal Allon Center. It was covered with clay and was therefore preserved. The boat dates from 100 BC to 100 AD. These are the years in which Jesus was active in the Sea of Galilee, where the Battle of Migdal took place during the Great Revolt of the Jews against the Romans.
In an extraordinary excavation operation, we rescued the boat from the clay very quickly for 11 days of digging, day and night under the direction of the IAA with the archaeologists Shelly Waxman, Kurt Raveh and Orna Cohen in the organization of Yigal Allon Center. The boat underwent a lengthy conservation process and in 2000 was transferred to a new exhibition hall in Yigal Allon Center, where the story of the discovery, excavation and preservation of pictures, films and animation is presented.
The boat is located in the middle of the exhibition. Hundreds of thousands of thrilled visitors come to see the boat every year.
